The subsidiary “Mine and Thermal Power Plant Ugljevik” ad Ugljevik operates within the Mixed holding “El. power industry of the Republic of Srpska” a.d. Trebinje. Predominating business activity of the company is production of thermal el. power and exploitation and sale of coal. This company is the biggest producer of el. power in Republic of Srpska. The Company has a tradition of 116 years.
Exploitation of wood-coal in Ugljevik coal basin dates back to 1899, when the Coal mine “Ugljevik” was opened and since then, the mining works have never stopped. Until 1985 the coal production was intended for general consumption, and since 1985 mainly for needs of the TPP Ugljevik with power of 300 MW and around 3% for general consumption. Main works on construction of the Mine and TPP “Ugljevik” with power of 300 MW and average annual production of 1560 GWh started in 1977 and ended in 1985, when the Thermal Power Plant became operational.
The exploitation of coal sine 1978 is done in the open-pit “Bogutovo Selo”. The forecasted annual production of the open-pit “Bogutovo Selo” is 1,750,000 tons of wood-coal. The coal is transported from the mine to the power plant with a conveyor belt. The Republic of Srpska Government (Ministry of industry, energy and mining) and Mixed holding “El. power industry of the Republic of Srpska” a.d. Trebinje, subsidiary Mine and Thermal Power Plant “Ugljevik” on September 13, 2013 have signed in Banja Luka a contract on concession for use of coal on sites “Bogutovo Selo” and “Ugljevik Istok” in Ugljevik municipality. The contract is signed on period of twenty-six years, with possibility of extension.
